From October 9 through 11, the Sierra Recreation and Fitness Center at 26887 Recodo Lane runs its annual Haunted Escape Room. It is free for ages 8 and up, spots are limited, and you register by calling 949-452-8342. On the city's capital projects schedule, the same center has a pool and tennis court rehabilitation with construction "anticipated Fall 2026" and completion in winter 2027.
Those two facts sum up the season. This October, Mission Viejo's calendar is hosted by public buildings and the lake association. Several of those places are also about to become work sites. The private restaurants that could compete for a fall evening are still being built, and most of them are scheduled for 2027.
Four addresses, two Saturdays
The Pumpkin Dive at Montanoso Recreation Center, 25800 Montanoso Drive, took place on October 3. Everything left this month happens in two clusters, on the weekend of October 9 to 11 and on Saturday, October 17.
| Date | Event | Where | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oct. 9, 10, 11 | Haunted Escape Room | Sierra Recreation and Fitness Center, 26887 Recodo Lane | Free, ages 8+, advance registration at 949-452-8342 |
| Sat., Oct. 10, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. | Fur-Ever Friends Fall Festival | Mission Viejo Animal Services Center, 28095 Hillcrest | Free; more than a dozen rescue groups with adoptable dogs, cats, bunnies, and reptiles |
| Sat., Oct. 17, 2 to 4 p.m. | Library Trick-or-Treat | Mission Viejo Library, 100 Civic Center | Free; activity stations throughout the library, costumes encouraged |
| Sat., Oct. 17, 5 to 8:30 p.m. | Lake Eerie | Lake Mission Viejo | For Lake Mission Viejo Association members; new guest policy this year |
October 17 can easily be one long afternoon. Library Trick-or-Treat ends at 4 p.m., and Lake Eerie begins an hour later. A family with lake membership could do both with time for dinner in between. The Fur-Ever Friends Fall Festival is also more than a costume event. Patch describes wildlife education, kids' crafts, and animal meet-and-greets alongside the adoptable animals.
Lake Eerie's guest rules changed
If you're used to bringing the whole extended family to Lake Eerie, the rules are different this year. The Lake Mission Viejo Association has published a new guest policy for the October 17 event:
- A maximum of 8 guests per member household
- Guest passes cost $10 each for ages 8 and up
- Children under 7 are free but still count toward the 8-guest total
- Members 62 and older get 50% off all guests, but the member has to ask for the discount
The program includes face painters, balloon twisters, a DJ, a Haunted Clubhouse, a trick-or-treat area, and crafts. The association says hours are longer this year to cut down on wait times. Taken together, the guest cap and the longer hours point to an event that has been drawing more people than the clubhouse can comfortably hold. A household planning to bring two sets of grandparents plus cousins should count heads before registering, because little ones count toward the cap too.
The lake's next big evening is Light the Lake on December 5, from 5 to 8:30 p.m., with holiday music and a boat parade. The association held its Oktoberfest on September 26.
Sierra's busy weekend, before the work begins
The Haunted Escape Room is a good reason to visit Sierra while it's still running normally. Its rehabilitation is really two projects. In May, the City Council awarded a contract to replaster the Sierra pool and replace its mechanical equipment. At its August meeting, the Council approved plans for the tennis courts. The city's recap says the court surface and concrete pad need work because of their age and condition, and that replacing the pad entirely is "the best long-term approach."
As of early October, the city has not posted closure dates for either the pool or the courts. The capital projects page still shows construction as anticipated for fall 2026 and completion in winter 2027. If you swim laps or play regular doubles at Sierra, you'll want to plan for a gap of a season or more and keep checking with the Public Services Department for an exact start date.
The rest of the fall work orders
Sierra isn't the only city facility on the fall 2026 schedule. The same capital projects page lists three more, and the August 27 Council recap adds detail on each.
Barbadanes Park. The Council approved plans for a rebuilt play area with new play elements and seating, along with better ADA access and sidewalks throughout the park. The project was still in bidding as of this week, with sealed bids due October 7. Completion is listed for spring 2027.
Marguerite Aquatics, Tennis and Recreation Center. The surface parking lot is getting bigger. According to the city, the expansion will meet immediate parking needs and reduce on-street parking during special events at the center and at Oso Creek Golf Course. That matters most to people who live on the streets that fill up on big meet days. Construction is anticipated this fall, with completion in spring 2027.
North Oso Creek Bike/Trail Open Space. Design wrapped up in summer 2026. Construction is anticipated this fall, with completion in spring 2027.
All four projects have the same timing. Design finished over the summer, construction is expected this fall, and completion falls between winter and spring 2027. So October is probably the last month for a while that every one of these places is open as usual. The city calls all of these dates "anticipated," and Barbadanes didn't even have a contractor as of early October, so it makes sense to treat the timelines as estimates.
Where dinner fits, and when that changes
For now, an October evening out after the library or a Saturday at the lake still means one of the city's established restaurants. The biggest new dining option in town hasn't opened yet. The Shops at Mission Viejo broke ground on its expansion on September 18, 2025. The project is an open-air village of about 50,000 square feet near the food court. On September 21, a Simon Property Group spokesperson told the Orange County Register that North Italia is slated for late 2026. Gus's BBQ, Tommy Bahama Marlin Bar, and Blue Bottle Coffee are expected in early 2027. Simon's leasing materials also list Pacific Catch and a two-level Arhaus.
The opening dates vary depending on who you ask. In June, a Gus's BBQ co-owner told the Register to expect late spring or summer of 2027 for what will be the South Pasadena restaurant's first Orange County location. The original 2025 plan aimed for the 2026 holiday shopping season. Even under the most hopeful schedule, the only restaurant expected before the holidays is North Italia.
Brea Mall gives a sense of what the village could mean. Its exterior redevelopment added an outdoor plaza along with a Din Tai Fung, Pacific Catch, and a North Italia that opened in April 2026. Location-analytics firm Placer.ai estimated that visits to Brea Mall rose 30.4% year over year in August 2026, compared with 1.2% at The Shops at Mission Viejo over the same month. The Register notes that Placer.ai can't isolate dining visits or prove cause and effect. Still, the comparison shows what the Mission Viejo village is meant to do once it opens.
The Orange County Business Journal has also reported on Creekside, a new restaurant from RJB Restaurant Group, opening this October at Sendero Marketplace. It will serve everyday American comfort food and open at 4 p.m. daily.
The block party kits that haven't arrived yet
One more city change is still in the works, and it fits with everything above. At the same August 25 meeting where it approved the park and recreation center plans, the City Council approved a new Block Party Program developed by the Community Services Commission. Under the commission's proposal, residents could reserve bins of party supplies and games. The bins would be delivered to a home or to a permitted city park, or picked up at a city location. A party in a city park would need an approved Special Event permit. The commission estimated the city's cost at $1,180 per kit option.
As of early October, the city hasn't posted a launch date or an application for the kits. To close your street for a party in the meantime, use the city's existing street-closure permit, last revised in 2019. It carries a $40 processing fee, has to be returned to Public Works at 200 Civic Center 30 days before the party, and requires authorization from every resident in the closed-off area. The applicant is responsible for special-event insurance and barricades. Closures have to be at intersections, and mid-block closures aren't allowed. A street party planned for a Halloween weekend would have needed that paperwork in by early October, so this year's best option is the city's own calendar on October 10 and October 17.
